A Year of Risks

Wow, it’s been awhile since I last posted! It’s been an incredible and extremely full past 6 months or so. I’ve been guilty of micro-blogging on Instagram and Facebook, yet haven’t posted those entries here…. forgive me!

It’s a new year and a fresh start for us all, and I couldn’t be happier. 2018 brought so many gifts. My college degree and our beautiful new baby BOY to name a couple. I’ll be back to share more about those later, but today in the spirit of jumping back in, I wanted to share a post about the new year!

Words for the New Year:

It was 3 or 4 years ago that I became interested in words for the new year. My first word came on December 30th 2015. I was in the throws of facial paralysis and unbeknownst to me, a few days away from another surgery. The word we were given that night resonated deeply and specifically, and brought us direction in what was a very trying time. It gave us stepping stones to what was next and ever since then I’ve loved the idea.

This year my word for 2019 came early. This past Thanksgiving I had the idea of creating placeholders for the family we were hosting. I told the Lord that I wanted a word for each of them. A word that would convey to them what the He was saying over them.

Thanksgiving came and when the time was right I was able to share the words the Lord had given to me. Finishing up, my mother-in-law said, “what about you?”, “what’s your word?”. I joked with her that my word was the product of me creating the name tags and not an actual “word”. Before I could move on Jonah spoke up. “I have a word for you. I hear the word RISK. This year is going to be a year of taking risks, but the reward will far outweigh the risks you take.” So here we are at the dawn of 2019 and I’m looking my new word right in the eyes. It makes me slightly nauseous, but I feel like it’s a word that has been coming for a while. A year of risks. What does that mean? I have some ideas, but I also have no delusions that this year will end far different than how it started.

There’s no telling what’s waiting for any of us out there in 2019. But the cool thing about a word, is that once it’s given, it’s up to the recipient to steward and unlock all the potential it holds. So my question to you today is what is your word for the new year? And how will you steward it? I’d like to invite you to join me this year in holding your word as you encounter challenges, ideas or transitions. Instead of plowing through the moment, look for what opportunities might be waiting for you to step out and take a chance … maybe even a risk?

To you, I hope I can faithfully go first. I hope to try new things and not let reservations stymie me. I hope I’m brave enough to take some risks … What about you?
